Korean Designer, Young Oh aims to oppose strict binaries through his brand.

Korean label YOUNGOH (00000) epitomizes unconventional textiles and androgynous fashion. Inspired by his experience between the transition of the analogue age and digital age - influencing him to confront, refine, and reinterpret dichotomous thinking, proposing a flexible and wide spectrum instead of strict binaries.

 

“YOUNGOH” strives to reconfigure the dualities of past and present, boundary and compromise, tradition and experimentation, and the separation between men and women. Each collection is packed with unorthodox styling and constructions.

Can you share with us the inspiration behind “YOUNGOH”? 

The brand “YOUNGOH” was inspired by my experience between the transition of the analogue age and digital age.

The transition inspires me to confront, refine, and reinterpret dichotomous thinking, proposing a flexible and wide spectrum instead of strict binaries. “YOUNGOH” strives to reconfigure the dualities of past and present, boundary and compromise, tradition and experimentation, and the separation between men and women.

 

What does “00000” represent? And how does it influence your designs?

“00000” is a translation of my name, Young Oh. “Young” and “Oh” have a similar pronunciation as the number zero and five in Korean respectively. I want the brand to represent my vision and fantasy.

 

What inspired you to start your own label?

I have always been very interested in the fashion industry since young, which led me to pursue an education in fashion. I was intrigued by fashion shows, and the thrill of it propelled me to start my label.

 

How do you think your designs have changed since your debut collection?

 

 

 

I was blessed with the help of Seoul Creative Studio, where I had the opportunity to launch my debut show. With each collection, I learn to refine the brand by self-reflecting and developing new ideas.

 

We noticed graphic tees and oversized silhouettes in your S/S20 collection. What is your inspiration behind the collection?

 

 

 

The concept for SS20 is ‘Within Living Memory’. From time to time my memories and experiences are not recalled clearly. These blurred images of my memories are expressed through the silhouettes and artwork of this collection.

 

What is the true definition of a “YOUNGOH” consumer?

Someone with a strong sense of identity, who knows how to style and express themselves but not bounded by trend. Someone who understands the brand and is capable of integrating their personality into it.

 

What can we look forward to see in your F/W 20 collection?

Simplistic yet idiosyncratic designs that emulate the brand identity. The quintessential YOUNGOH have to exude a strong sense of individualism.
